Lactalis is constantly looking to expand its presence in the French and European countryside. The group's 78 industrial sites in France and 44 in the rest of the world present a challenge for the Group's environmental teams.

Confused by the implementation of the new CAP, they must receive regular updates on Group policy and the value added it creates for dairy industry. The milk supply department has made a special effort in this field during the last few years, to strengthen the links between producers and the company. The journal 'Rencontres sur les chemins du lait ('Encounters on the milk path') has become a must-read in the profession and the "Lettre aux présidents de groupement" (Letter to the group's chairpersons'), which expresses the Group's position on various issues, is read by everyone who works in the sector.

The dairy industry has a particular responsibility because of its heavy industrial activities, but also due to the fact that production units are often located in delicate rural areas where respecting environmental standards is essential.
It is for this reason that water and energy consumption and waste management are very carefully monitored. An annual appraisal of water and energy consumption is systematically carried out for all sites, which has so far recorded year-on-year improvements for all criteria. There has been considerable investment in purification during recent years, as this is a sensitive issue for rural areas. This has led to far greater control over waste in all the Group's large production units.
Efforts in this area have been rewarded by 7 sites being certified as conforming to ISO standard 14001. This initial Group will shortly be joined by others.

The purchasing department has made significant progress in reducing the weight and types of packaging used by the Group. This has led, for example, to savings of 60 tonnes of cardboard on Bridelice 'îles flottantes' packaging, 80 tonnes of plastic film used in Lactel milk packaging and 44 tonnes of polyethylene on yoghurt pots. Efforts are also made to reflect on how consumers dispose of packaging, to try and avoid high levels of raw material waste. Teams from the central purchasing department have a serious commitment to this issue, have already achieved significant results and are continuing to look for further improvements.
